Keeping Notifications Accurate and Up to Date

Notification Instruction Forms, also known as NIFs, tell Ontario Dig Authority how an Underground Infrastructure Owner should receive locate request notifications and who should receive them.

A NIF includes important operational information such as:

  • Contact information
  • Locate Service Provider information, if applicable
  • Notification delivery details
  • Emergency protocols
  • Internal routing instructions

When to Update a NIF

UIOs must notify Ontario Dig Authority whenever there is any change to the information on their NIF. This includes temporary, minor, or major changes.

Examples include changes to:

  • Contact names or email addresses
  • Notification delivery methods
  • Locate Service Provider information
  • Emergency contact information
  • Internal routing instructions

Keeping NIFs current helps ensure locate requests, emergency notifications, and other important communications are sent to the right contacts.


Validating and Updating Notification Instructions

Ontario Dig Authority asks UIOs to validate their notification instructions twice per year to confirm the information remains accurate. A signed Notification Instruction Form is required, even when no changes are needed.

To update notification instructions, UIOs must submit an updated and signed form at least two business days before the requested change takes effect. Changes cannot be made without the completed form.

UIOs must also notify Ontario Dig Authority within 30 calendar days of any change involving their address, bankruptcy, closure, merger, acquisition, sale or divestiture of all or part of their business.

Submitting NIF Updates

Ontario Dig Authority requires at least 48 business hours’ notice before the requested change takes effect. System changes cannot be made without an updated and signed Notification Instruction Form.
